Vyrnwy Valley Report By Chairman Tomos Parry
Here is a report of last year as chairman of Vyrnwy Valley YFC:
We started off the year with a successful new members evening drawing in a number of new members from the area. Shortly after it was the field day. In recent years the field day hadn’t been a priority for members but I was keen to up our presence on that day so we entered the efficiency and safety, lamb trimming, fencing and stock judging competition. The members had a lot of fun and it was a great experience for them.
The Eisteddfod was next in our calendar and all members had a lot of fun competing in the mime to music. We had a lot of laughs rehearsing and taking part in the prelim on stage. This was a good experience for the members of our club to have a go and do something on stage.
Next on the calendar was public speaking and in recent years this is a competition we have entered a lot of competitors in. We had a successful competition coming 3rd with our junior public speaking, 3rd in the just a minute competition and we came 1st in the intermediate brains trust competition where we went on to represent the county in Builth.
Apart from the competitions we also had some fun nights in the club, such as ten pin bowling with Llanfair YFC. We had a messy night turkey dressing, which was a first for some of the members but all had fun and it was a good experience for them.
Shortly after Christmas we had our annual dinner in COBRA Meifod. This was also a messy night and good fun was had by all.
A personal achievement for the club was Performing ‘Under Milk Wood’ in theatre Hafren for the Drama competitions in February. This took a lot of hard work and commitment from the members but it payed off in the end and we had a lot of fun in the process. After this we were able to organise a concert in Meifod village hall and we invited Llanfyllin and Guilsfield YFC to perform their Drama’s it was a good turnout and we raised money for the three clubs involved.
Some of us headed up to Blackpool for the weekend for The national AGM. Now this was a amazing weekend with plenty of beer, banter and dancing to last us until we went to Newtown again. We came home with plenty of stories to tell.
A really enjoyable day for me is the rally where we competed in a number of different competitions such as stock judging, flower arranging, wood work, and my favourite Tug of War. The 7 lads involved I think only join young farmers for the pulling and the beer but that’s another story, but no seriously we are a keen young side which I hope we will keep competing every year slowly progressing. All that ‘pulling’ was thirsty work so we went on to have a good night at the rally dance.
To conclude I enjoyed my year as chairman and can see a lot of potential in this young growing club and I am looking forward to another year as the chairman of Vyrnwy Valley YFC.
We have started off the YFC year with a successful new members evening with a number of members old and new attending.
Our first competition was the field day where we came 8th over all but our main achievements were in stock judging and coming second in efficiency and safety. It was a good experience for all the members to take part.
We were more recently part of the organising committee of a successful YFC Eisteddfod in Llanfyllin, along with Llanfyllin, Dyffryn Tanant and Dyffryn Banw. I would like to say a big thank you to all who took part and those who helped and made it possible for us members to compete. Id like to say a big congratulations to those who had a prize in craft section, to Indi Wilkinson that came third in welsh learners recital, Hannah Parry for third in Instrumental solo playing the clarinet and all who took part in the mime to music where we had stage. As a club we came 6th overall which is great achievement for a small club like ourselves.
We were invited to go bowling with Llanfair YFC an are looking forward to trip to Shrewsbury for he ghost tour in the next few weeks. Next competition we will be working towards will be the Public speaking.
